Feedback for Night Cycling recce
-;
To ICs, Jeremy and Waikwan & the rest of the odacians who participated.
Firstly, thanks for letting me tag along with the recce. I'll be reliterating some of the points that i've covered during the trip as well as giving you all some suggestions which may improve the overall appeal & safety of the activity.
Safety-
- Traffic rules are well observed.
- Every group should have at least 2 first aiders so that should any half be separated, they have first aiders to attend if any injuries occur
- Brief your participants beforehand on the danger zones and remind them of it again at the respective checkpoints in which the danger zone lies ahead
- Place sufficient marshallers @ both uphill & downhill bends
- Do not block the filter lane.Move your people closer up to the traffic light.
- Always watch out for vehicles behind you
- Keep a minimum safety distance between cyclists. Give yourself ample time to stop.
- Do not be complacent when going down slopes. It is alright to have fun, but know when to press the brakes.
- All your ICs need to remember all the route and the Standard Operating Procedure (set by someone with all having the common understanding) should any emergency happen.
Route-
- Generally okay
- Route up Mt Faber is challenging and interesting. Should encourage all to cycle up. Take a break the the carpark at the first half before taking up the steeper part of the slope. First timers are very likely to experience cramps, do watch out for their safety
- To Bedok reservoir I feel is abit redundant-moving further away from your end point without purpose
Suggestions-
- Schedule deliberate rest points. The night is long and tiring, so give the participants sufficient breaks. Even better if you can include places with food
- Seek out places of interest. Highlight them as your rest points/ checkpoints. You may want to include bond building activities to make it interesting. Make full use of your location/surroundings. (if not, night cycling will be no different from cyling at night round the school track)
- Try to minimise right turns if possible. Its dangerous if you have a long stretch of cyclist and some cannot turn in time. Vehicles may be speeding straight.
- Say half of the group gets caught at the red light, the front group need not stop to wait, just slow down will do.
- No need to stop at every red light. There are obvious ones that can avoid. Definitely not T-junctions, don't siao siao ar (Need abit of on road experience, so i don't recommend. Stick to your usual practices)
- You will meet participants who think or are very pro and try to "outwin" you. You will have to stress to them the importance of safety and they are participating under the school's name. Tough luck to the IC, most likely they will BOH CHAP you, persuasion is a soft skill you'll have to learn.
- Take note of weak cyclists and put them at the front.
That's all I have. The above are just some comments given based on my experiences. Pardon me if there is anything you don't agree with. Any queries please feel free to ask =) I'll be glad to answer them.
Cheers,
Ter
PS: Wishing Peak Seah a speedy recovery.

History
NY ODAC was established in 1978 and was formerly known as OAC. The motto of OAC was
"The experience is YOURS".
During that time, OAC focused more on discipline and was more regimental as compared to the current ODAC. Mrs Koh was the teacher-in-charge then.
Furthermore, 4 marine groups, namely Blue Whale, Dolphin, Marlin and Stingray were initiated in the early years of OAC.
In 2003, Mr Thaddeus Lawrence took over the 1st ODAC. The 1st ODAC is also known as the 25th OAC and has a strength of about 20.
Mr Lawrence took part in the Sahara Desert Run in July 2009.
The motto of ODAC is
"Challenge your limits". As an odacian,we strive to explore and push our limits, be it physically or mentally, especially when participating in outdoors activities.
In addition, all odacians adhere to the following 8 qualities:
Commitment
Determination
Discpline
