Race5
-;
Hey here's another adventure race from NUS ODAC. Its called race5. I received this via email from our 2nd batch senior, genevie. I wonder how she got my email. lol.
NUS ODAC invites you and your club this year once again to participate in our annually held amazing race. Currently in its 5th year running, RACE 5, promises to be an even bigger and exciting event. With a string of amazing sponsors and great prizes up to $2000 for grab, you'll sure not want to miss out on this great opportunity.
Come join us in discovering locations and activities in Singapore you may have never heard of. Heard of Singapore legends or myths? You may just find the answer here with us.
Race head to head with the other competing teams and see who can come out tops and last for all 3 days. We'll warn you, its gonna be tiring, you're gonna get dirty but that's what count! Ain't it?
For more information you can contact Huiqi @ 90886105.
The 3 days are from 20th to 22nd july. So those going to mizuno cannot sign up for this already. Well for those who do not have anything on you may consider joining this race. Its a 3 day race, so I think its gonna be a much greater challenge than ATC. Train hard if you are going!Again, I want to emphasize all the seniors' point on trainings.
More details in the website shown above.
Most J2s are already in the Mizuno run on 22nd july so there won't be any j2s to co-ordinate everything in this race. If you guys are interested, please co-ordinate among yourself, or the P/VPs can take charge.

Campcraft: Lesson 1-Ropes and Knots

Campcraft: Lesson 1-Ropes and Knots
Hi guys.. this topic isn't my field of speciality. My knotting skills sucks like shit and I cant remember them especially those high level ones ( eg.bowline) because I'm too lazy to pratice it long term. Paiseh..so I've found this site which is quite useful as it teaches you how to make that knot using java applet. It also explains to you its uses and how you can apply them. Lessons on knot tying is really very dry for the person learning, many batches have felt the same. Nevertheless, knot tying is an important skill and you need to know some of the basic knots in order to be profficient in the outdoors. So hopefully, you guys can take the time after your mid-year exams to learn a few different knots for each person and spread around.

How to put on your bagpack
-;
Backpack - Getting The Right Fit Your backpack plays a very important role in contributing to your overall comfort on the trail. In determining which size of pack and componentry is correct for you, there is no substitute for actually trying a loaded pack on to get a feel of the load. However, if you know what goes into selecting the right pack, you may still end up better than someone who actually tried on and bought a pack that's not suitable for him/her. Backpack Fitting Guide
To determine the correct pack size, you must have your torso length measured first. This is the single most important thing you can do. Backpacks don't care how long your legs are, or how tall you are, only how long your torso is.
Step 1: First measure your torso length. Ask a friend to use a flexible tape measure (a tailor's tape works best) to measure along the surface of your back from your seventh cervical vertebra (the most prominent bump on your neck) to a horizontal line across your back connecting the outward protrusions of your hip crest (iliac crest). Once you know your torso length, you'll know what frame size of backpack is suitable for you.
Step 2: Then determine the right sized belts to ensure a comfortable carry. To determine the right size, you must measure your hip circumference. A tailor's tape works best. Remember that the hipbelt is wrapping around and cupping over your hip bones, so be sure to measure the circumference of your hip crests (see diagram), not your stomach. Once you've determined your hip circumference, you'll know which size belt is right for you.
NOTE: The layer we call clothing , between you and your pack, can make or break the whole comfort equation. Look for clothes that place seams out the way of the harnessing, don't restrict your movements, and wick or dry quickly. Studying your clothing system for these details can make a good trip turn into a great trip. Since the obvious isn't always so obvious, here are some examples: belts and crumping pants wrinkles and creates pressure around your tender under- belly -> not so great. Girls with frilly undies: frequently you have hardware where your packs shoulder pads come over your collarbones as well as where the pack rests on your back. Options are plain -> put on a sports bra, or in the tradition of the 60s don't wear one at all.
Putting On Your Pack Loosen both shoulder harness straps, the load lifter straps, and the hipbet. The load lifter straps are the ones on top of the harness, and extends upwards at an angle, connecting into the top of the back panel. Put 10-15 kg into the pack. Ideally put a sleeping bag in the bottom and some additional weight on top of this. Put the pack on and attach and postion the hipbelt so it basically straddles your hipbones (iliac crest); close the buckle and make the hipbelt straps snug. The bony structure on the side of your hips should be 1" below the top edge of the waist belt. An easy way to determine this is to lift your leg so your thigh is horizontal to the ground. The break in your leg should be level with the bottom edge of the waist belt. This is important! Many people have the tendency to wear the waist belt too low. This tendency means the iliac crest is not supporting the weight, and therefore will creep down, onto the top of your bottom, as you hike. With the waist belt in the correct position, tighten the straps on the bottom of the shoulder harness. No gaps should appear between top of your shoulders and bottom of the shoulder harness. The lower end of the adjusting shoulder harness straps should terminate approximately two inches below your armpits. Lightly tension the shoulder-pad lift straps at the top of each shoulder harness. Place the sternum strap in a comfortable position on your upper chest and snug it lightly. It should be abbout 2" below your collarbone. You should be able to breathe comfortably when the strap is fastened. It is not essential that you keep your sternum strap fastened at all times. It is most helpful when you are negotiating uneven terrain.
Correct loading of a Pack Care should be taken to load the pack correctly. Heavy items such as food and stove should be placed as close to the frame of the pack as possible and above the lower compartment. Lighter, bulkier items such as spare clothing should be used to pad around the load to prevent shifting. Pack small items that you may need quickly in the pack's top pocket or side pockets. If you are hiking on moderate or level trails, pack the heavier items higher in your pack so your bones support the load instead of your muscles. If you are hiking in the backcountry or in uneven terrain, pack heavier items lower in the pack giving yourself a lower center of gravity to reduce top-heavy pack sway.
How To Hoist A Loaded Backpack Once you stuff your backpack, how do you get that big honker on your back? Try these steps: With the pack sitting upright on the ground, move one of your legs close to it and, with one hand, grab the pack's haul loop. (That's the half-circle of webbing stitched into the pack just above the shoulder harness.) Using a wide stance with knees bent, slide the pack up the side of your calf. Bring it up to your thigh and let it rest. Your thigh should be roughly parallel with the ground. Steady the pack with one hand. Slip the other arm and shoulder through one of the shoulder straps, pushing your shoulder in as far as you can. Without any abrupt or jerking motion, swing the pack onto your back and slip your arm through the other shoulder strap. Buckle the hipbelt first, then cinch down the shoulder straps. You're set to go! When you're ready to remove the pack, be sure to first loosen the shoulder straps.
Tip: As you walk throughout the day, tinker slightly with the tightness of your hipbelt and shoulder straps. A brief amount of relief might help your hips or shoulders feel less fatigued. info frm http://www.boac-online.com/

I hope all ATC participants have a good rest. =)
Well, a commendable effort put in by most of us in ATC, although, the results are far, FAR from what we desired. I hoped you all had a great experience and fun in this competition, explored your limits and really place your "mind over body". Make this a fruitful race to learn from. Although we did not win anything, I really hope that one day I will see 5th NY ODAC batch up on stage holding up the trophy high and proud. Be it in any competition, our yearly VM, whatever you all take part in, strive to win! Perhaps this will be the last competition the J2s will be taking part in the name of NY ODAC. The name of NY ODAC and how other jcs will see NY ODAC as is now up to you guys. Your every action tells them everything.
Its also great to see you guys making friends with other jcs after the competition, congratulating them, etc. After all, we all are fellow ODACians who love outdoors. Perhaps in the near future you can initiate joint activities with these jcs. However, always have in mind that in competitions, all of us are rivals. Besides that, we are all friends =D.
A piece of advice from me, and other j2s as well. Start your trainings now. I mean, after the mid years. Its useless if you only start weeks before the competition. The body doesn't work this way. In ODAC, we train all parts of the body. Of course, the most important is stamina for you to sustain long distance, your thigh muscles, shoulder muscles and followed by other parts. If you aim to win in future competitions, you need to start pushing your body now. Maybe it would be good for you to find out and review how other jcs train, or look at our own db people train.
Also, some things for you to think about ATC. I will not initiate any ATC debrief, but you can initiate among yourselves if you want to. Or you could post them here.
1) What have you done well in ATC? 2) What is it that you could have done better? 3) What will you do to improve yourselves? 4) What is one important value/quality that you take away from ATC? 5) Any other thoughts?
I hope you guys strive to win future competitions, especially VM. Whatever you take part in, don't just think of the goodie bag, fun or the experience. Think BIG. Think about the prizes as well ($$$). If other jcs can, why not NY ODAC?
I see potential in the 5th ODAC batch. I see many ironkids! , but there's still a long way. Unleash them. Force them out. The j2s are stepping down so there's nothing much we can do, except providing advice. You are on your own and its your choice to whether or not to win and carry NY ODAC name high. With the strength of the current 5th batch, you can achieve much more than what we have achieved.
Before you even think of winning, train hard. Start early.

Round of applause to the participants of ATC 2007! NYODAC sent 4 teams this year!
Here they are :D
Haha, we look totally unglam la! But it was a really fun and GREAT EXPERIENCE!
For this year's ATC, we cycled, ran 28KM in total, kayaked & god knows what!. The sun was.. being very mean today, so now we look very roasted. Even the demure got burnt! Surprisingly, Ubin is not where the main activities are held, instead everything is held in Pasir Ris and Tampines.
Its hard for me to describe and tell you guys the activites we had, because you have to experience it yourself to know it. Some interesting ones include tunneling, this koala bear thingy where you have to hang onto a tube and just move it from one end of this stand to the other end, getting through a obstable course on "skis", river crossing via rope elements, and i think thats about it.
Oh yeah, one of the sponsors was Red Bull! See, we love Red Bull!
For today.
It made us really high with all its caffeine, so yeah we actually danced all of Nanyang's mass dance for everyone!
Haha, theres videos! But its currently with Wenhui now (:
And CJC ODAC dedicated a song and thanks to NYODAC for encouragement and our dance. Haha, i think its Yiqian's group who did the encouraging (: They also bagged the first three positions for the Inter-School Category, bringing home prizes worth... A LOT OF MONEY! Congrats and great job! :D
".. if i could just see you tonight!"
Haha, the guys actually danced to "A Thousand Miles" for us.
Jiajie also won something! It's this Power Breather thing. Supposed to make your lung capacity larger? Haha i dont know. But have to uhm, suck air from it like 30times a day?
Roy also wanted to get it, so he ran to the back and got ready for the second one to be given away.
Haha, very unglam!
Many people got taupoked today too :D Theres Honghao, WENHUI, Roy, and Jiajie ALMOST got hit.
Many thanks to those who came down to support us today (: Honghao, Hazel, Eunice, Wenhui, Priscilla,Weiling and Senior Terence!
"I teach you all the game of Polar bear.."
We really appreciate it!
Group shots! This is for IJC :D
Great job guys!
NANYANG ODAC! Remember, winning isnt the most important thing! The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. Ralph Waldo Emerson
AND WE DID IT! Doesnt matter we didnt win, doesnt matter about what positions we got, doesnt matter at all (: most importantly, we completed it! Great Job everyone!
We'll definitely join again next year! For more photos, CLICK HERE!

Hello! This is Huifang, water PTI of 3rd ODAC.
I remember taking tons of photos of the day trek during the first 3 months. Never got around to passing them to someone where it might be of a greater meaning and serve more of a memory to. Any of you interested in getting those photos, especially those who were around during that day trek. Thought you all might be interested, since i didn't see any of those photos on this blog. Or maybe i just missed it.
Anyone interested?

hi there. prez of the 3rd batch here.
well. wanna leave some notes here at the moment.
firstly, there's this tradition that more seniors will disappear from odac after we had finished our years in jc. i don't know if you guys really mind about the absence of our presence.
for one thing, it is a good thing that the lack of presence of us can do away with the awkward feeling, mainly due to the 'age gap'? most prob right. that's how i felt when i was in odac.
but i hope you all will welcome any seniors who might return back to help out or stuffs.
i guess the most i can help now is to offer advices to you guys if anyone of you need any help. number is 96256745. of course the first person you all will turn to would be either the teachers or odacians from the 4th batch. but it will be perfectly fine to contact us if the two parties are busy with exams and studies. that is at least my point of view. but i am positive that odacians from my batch will be glad to help out. can ask your senior for the respective positions' contact numbers.

Introduction on the 3rd Odac and OTC 2005
-;
Hello fellow odacians!! Its me Terence!! Thanks for allowing me to use your blog to update myself on the club's progress and activities.
I'm sure many of you fresh odacians have little or almost no club on what ODAC does and what we have done..so maybe I'll first introduce you to some of the activities that we have done and maybe it'll inspire you peeps and spark off your passion for outdoor activities =)
Firstly, let me intro you all my fellow clubmates who have went through alot with me.Our batch consist of 16 odacians(formerly 17*) whom are all in the exco because of our small strength.
Here's my club..
From the top right: Jeremy Mok-Our boss ,Su JunYuan-PTI, Edwin Neo-Secretary, Sebastian-Quartermaster, Ben Cho-Rover, Nikhil-Rover, Tiang Peck Hor-Vice President /Discipline Chief, Me-Rover
From bottom right: Ong Han Ying-Publicity Head / Treasurer, Belinda Lim-Medic, Adeline Ong-Quartermistress, Tan Chun Xu a.k.a Big Chest-Vice President /Activity Chief, Wang Xiao Yan-Rover, Shimin-Medic, Chen Hui Fang-PTI, Lynette Lim-Rover
Like all of you, we started out as newbies..not knowing anything about odac. It was through our very first day trek that I got to know these bunch of best buddies who went through lotsof thick and thin with me. We were previlege to be able to participate in the previously annual OTC-Overseas Training Camp to prove our worth as a odacian. We went to Endau Rompin National Park in Malaysia for our OTC.
Crossing the river *The water level would we waist deep during moonsoon season
It was a gruelling 4 days trip to experience the beauty of nature and to put all our skills, motivation, determination, teamwork and leadership to the test. Some of the challenges that we faced were the 6hrs up and down trek to a magnificent waterfall called Buaya Sangkut meaning trapped crocodile.
Lunch at the very top of the waterfall
One of the highlights of the trip was venturing into the leech infested area after crossing a river on foot. At the base camp we set up our tents and bashas and prepared for outdoor cooking. Plain maggie noodles, canned food, tuna, bread and preserved food makes up much of our meals. Fixing up the tents and bashasOur campsite During the day, our different groups will be competing in team building challenges and in the light-less night we had activities that built up our confidence & trust.
The best part of the trip was at a lake called Tasik Air Biru ( The Blue Lake). The water there is very clear and we could see the small fishes inside as we dived down with our self made snorkelling equipment.
Your Year2s were also lucky enough to be able to experience the wonderful lake and the once in a life time jump from a 5 metre tall tree branch into the freezing cold water. Well for me and some others, it may be twice in a life time =)
Climbing up the slippery trunk isn't easy
Raphael and Henry preparing for a couple's jump
Mr Ong enjoying the cold water in a tyre tube float
The last few days of the trip were one of the most challenging and tough ones. We were brought to this small shed where they kept a load of bicycles and that was when we found out that we had to cycle to and fro Desaru, a beach resort. At first we that it was not so bad at all, but that opionion changed when we had to cycle on low grade bikes with our heavy equipment and for a total distance of 80+ km.Forget about the distance, I was even having doubts if the bike could move.
As we made our way back from the beach to our resting place, the sky grew darker and darker until we could no longer see our hands. At this time we were told to take our all our torches and fix it onto the bike with a tape. but due to our negligence, we took our equipment for granted and did not check if our batteries were working and we landed ourselves in quite some trouble. To make it worse, cars from the opposite lane (we were cycling on the road by the way) blinded our eyes with their frontlights.
Under such circumstances, we had no choice but to stop the cycling and rest for the day, we search high and low on the roads for quite some time before heaven was kind to us to let us find a big open ground among the endless plantation of palm trees. From their with the help of our seniors, half of us set up a huge basha and tents. The other half started a big camp fire with the firewood that we found to make dinner for that night. From this I learnt that we must always be prepared for any situation and it was definitely a good test of our outdoor skills and responsiveness to surprises.
Well, thats basically what my batch had done for our OTC that our seniors had planned for us. There are many other interesting activites like High Elements, Night Cycling, Day Treks, Kayaking etc which I may cover next time. Hope you juniors have enjoyed the long presentation. Thank you!

For more information, please refer to the blog for future updates or feel free to approach any NYODACIANS.
History
NY ODAC was established in 1978 and was formerly known as OAC. The motto of OAC was "The experience is YOURS".
During that time, OAC focused more on discipline and was more regimental as compared to the current ODAC. Mrs Koh was the teacher-in-charge then.
Furthermore, 4 marine groups, namely Blue Whale, Dolphin, Marlin and Stingray were initiated in the early years of OAC.
In 2003, Mr Thaddeus Lawrence took over the 1st ODAC. The 1st ODAC is also known as the 25th OAC and has a strength of about 20.
Mr Lawrence took part in the Sahara Desert Run in July 2009.
The motto of ODAC is "Challenge your limits". As an odacian,we strive to explore and push our limits, be it physically or mentally, especially when participating in outdoors activities.
In addition, all odacians adhere to the following 8 qualities:
Commitment Determination Discpline Integrity Responsibility Nature Appreciation To have Adventurous Spirit To be a good team player
In 2004, Mr Ong Jiun Hoe and Ms Yap Chiew Ring joined ODAC. ODAC engages in both land and water activities.
In 2005, Ms Lynette Poh joined the ODAC family, leaving in 2006.
In 2006, Ms Seah joined us and assisted Mr Ong in running the club, both stepping down in 2007.
In 2010, Mr Ong came back and together with the newly joined teachers, Mr Loy Suan Hui and Ms Chim Yi Hui, they run the club together.
In 2011, Ms Tan Shuyun, Ms Tan Yi Zhen Sherilyn and Mr Gurmit took over Odac.
NY ODAC has participated in various competitions which include the Adventure Race Singapore, Adventure Trail Challenge
and annual Vertical Marathon. Moreover, ODAC also participate in other activities such as the Outdoor Training Camps, Night Cycling and De Urbanised Traverse.
In 2012, Ms Tan Shuyun left the odac family, and Mr Gilbert Tay joined in.
In 2014, Mr Gilbert Tay left the odac family, and Mr Terence Lin joined in. Together with Mr Gurmit and Ms Tan Yi Zhen, they run the club.
